On 23 June, 2014, Professor Xia Yanzhi of Qingdao Univesity stated in the Strategically Emerging Industry and Bio-based Fiber Seminar that the world’s biggest production center for alginate fiber located in Qingdao City, Shandong Province has been finished, with a capacity of 800 t/a. The industrialization and commercial application of alginate fiber will help reduce the consumption of chemical fibers.
China is a large supplier of alginate in the world, with the largest output of alginate based on fresh weigh. As is well known, China regards the application of alginate (raw material) in the production of bio-based fibers as an important direction for the domestic bio-based fiber industry. At present, some companies like Nachl Biotechnology Co., Ltd. have applied the bio-based alginate fiber in the medical dressing.
By the way, made from alginate, alginate fiber is a kind of bio-based fiber characterized with special functions like fine hygroscopicity, hemostatic property, biocompatibility, flame retardancy and biodegradable adsorbability, which indicates great application potential in both medical and garment industries.
