Ministry launches intensive crackdown on banned and restricted pesticides
On April 15, 2026, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held a video conference to deploy a nationwide campaign against illegal production, sales, and use of banned and restricted pesticides. The campaign focuses on three major areas: illegal production (including underground manufacturing, unlicensed or over-scope production, and production licenses); illegal sales (including online sales of banned pesticides, unlicensed or off-premises sales); and illegal adulteration (adding banned pesticides or other active ingredients into formulations).
Ten key tasks were outlined, spanning source prevention, strict process supervision, and high-pressure punishment. These include inspecting former producers of phased-out pesticides (e.g., phorate, isofenphos-methyl) and soon-to-be-banned high-toxicity pesticides (e.g., carbofuran, aldicarb); cracking down on illegal distribution channels; curbing adulteration; strengthening safety use guidance; tightening pre-market residue testing; enhancing testing methods; and stepping up administrative approvals and penalties. The Ministry also called for inter-agency coordination and local action plans to be submitted by April 20.
Q1 glyphosate registrations: export-oriented and low-toxicity dominant
In the first quarter of 2026, after the public notice period for new pesticide registrations, a total of 21 glyphosate products obtained formal registration. By registration type, export-only products accounted for the majority – 13 out of 21, or 62% – reflecting a strong strategic push by domestic companies into overseas markets.
Regarding toxicity, 18 products (86%) were classified as low-toxicity, indicating continuous safety improvements. In terms of formulations, soluble concentrates dominated with 16 products (76%), favored for their ease of transport and use. Among enterprises, Nantong Taihe Chemical stood out with three glyphosate registration certificates, the highest number in this period, demonstrating strong product development and registration capabilities.
