Welcome to the November issue of Sweeteners China News (Vol. 4 Issue 11 2014).
The supply of most of sweeteners in Chinese market surpassed their demand. For example, sucrose, high intensity sweeteners and sugar alcohol.
In fact, Chinese sucrose market was in downturn because its supply surpassed its demand. Statistics from China Sugar Association showed that most of sugar manufacturers in China are losing money in the extraction season of 2013/2014. It seems that it is sugar manufacturers’ best choice to transform or prolong their industrial chains in order to turn loss into profit. Meanwhile, the supply of high intensity sweeteners and sugar alcohol also suffered oversupply; manufacturers could still make profits even though cutting down the price.
It is noted that some new sweeteners in foreign countries started to develop in China in recent years, such as neotame and crystalline fructose. Those products enjoy wide application and their demand across the world also is on the increase. However, the application of those products in downstream industry encountered bottlenecks, thus enterprises still need to do more in R&D.
