In 2025, the overall situation of crop pests and diseases in China is relatively severe. According to relevant reports, wheat, rice, corn and other major grain crops are all facing pest and disease threats of varying degrees, with large affected areas in some regions, exerting a certain impact on agricultural production. These outbreaks not only directly restrict yield formation but also pose potential risks to both produce quality and farmland ecosystems.
Entering 2026, the latest forecast from the National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Centre shows a trend of improvement. It is projected that 23 major pests and diseases on wheat, rice, corn, potato and other staple crops plus oil and vegetable crops will break out heavily, with a national occurrence area of 150 million ha (2.25 billion mu), down 10.6% from 2025. By crop:
- Wheat: four diseases and one pest are expected to affect 34 million ha, 16.5% lower than in 2025
- Rice: three pests and two diseases are expected to affect 67 million ha, 9.8% lower than in 2025
- Corn: four pests and three diseases are expected to affect 41 million ha, 7.8% lower than in 2025
Although the overall affected area is decreasing, the risk of heavy outbreaks of some major pests and diseases in certain localities remains prominent, and the control situation must not be taken lightly. In the face of this still severe trend, various localities should attach great importance, strengthen early monitoring, early warning and prevention preparations. Particular emphasis should be placed on key regions and principal pest types; scientifically formulate control strategies and implement integrated management measures to minimise the impact of pests and diseases on crop yield and quality, so as to build a solid safeguard for national food security and sustainable agricultural development.
