China started producing EG firstly in the 1960s, and the development was very slowly in the first 10 years. After entering the 1970s, the industry enjoyed its first fast growing stage along with the development of China's petrochemical industry. However, the downstream of EG was still undeveloped. Fortunately, both the output and consumption volume of EG started to surge while EG's application in the production of polyester was introduced in China. In recent years, China's EG industry developed significantly along with the fast growing Chinese economy and improving production technology. Except the traditional petroleum route of synthesizing EG, some of domestic producers have successfully developed coal route in order to bring down the production cost. However, China's current output of EG still cannot meet domestic demand. And because of the advanced technology and cheaper raw materials, imported EG is cheaper than that of domestic EG in Chinese market which would drag the development of China's EG industry.
