Attention is being paid to the development of some biomaterials in China. Algae fiber, a high-tech fiber, is drawing great attention from several coastal textile enterprises thanks to its special properties and some production projects have been constructed recently. Besides, PBS is considered as a good opportunity for traditional oil and coal chemical enterprises to transfer upstream cost and gain high added value though current market may be not mature enough.
With increasing demand for cassava, China needs more cassava to meet needs of domestic processing enterprises and thus import volume of cassava increases fast in recent years. For example, China's import volume of dry cassava reached about 5.6 million tonnes in Jan.-Sept. 2012 while it was 4.9 million tonnes in 2011. In addition, in Oct. 2012, Mingyang Biochemical constructed its first oversea cassava program in Vietnam so as to meet the strong demand for cassava and control raw materials supply.
Additionally, the average corn price in China has decreased sharply in Oct. 2012 mainly due to the corn harvest season. However, the prices of some biomaterials with corn as raw material haven’t been affected much but remained stable instead during this period.
