China is the world's largest producer of pesticide technical material, accounting for nearly 70% of global capacity. Most of its exports are processed into formulations by multinational companies, with exports driving the sector. Between 2021 and 2024, China's pesticide technical exports fluctuated. During the pandemic, other countries faced supply chain disruptions, but China's integrated industry quickly resumed production and attracted large orders. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's chemical pesticide technical output fell from a historic high of 3.78 million tonnes (100% active ingredient basis, same below) in 2016 to 2.67 million tonnes in 2023. In 2025, output reached 4.12 million tonnes.
In 2025, the global pesticide market bottomed out in terms of channel inventory digestion. Demand is rising, and the international market is showing signs of recovery. In pesticide technicals, leading companies are using scale and cost control to expand market share, while small and medium-sized enterprises face pressure to exit. At the same time, the industry is upgrading processes through microchannel reaction and continuous manufacturing, and optimising global supply chains by establishing overseas plants and securing registrations. However, high-cost investment and raw material volatility remain challenges. In pesticide formulations, global food security concerns are driving market expansion. The acceleration of agricultural modernisation in developing countries is promoting the uptake of highly efficient, low-toxicity products. Industry concentration is rising domestically. With policies phasing out outdated capacity and the adoption of new technologies such as biopesticides and nano-controlled release, pesticide products are becoming greener and smarter.
This issue provides an overview of the new registrations of pesticide formulations in China in 2025. It not only outlines the registration status of China's new registrations of pesticide formulations, but also introduces the newly registered formulations under the categories of herbicide, insecticide and fungicide, as well as for the export-only pesticides in detail. The issue also presents those first-registration active ingredients of pesticide formulations in China during the year.
