China's total grain output in 2012 reached 589.57 million tonnes, up 3.2% over that in 2011. It is the ninth year for China to enjoy a continuous gain output growth in the past nine years.
However, the food self-sufficiency rate, in the meanwhile, witnessed a decrease. According to an official from the Development Research Center of the State Council, China's food self-sufficiency rate has dropped to less than 90% in 2012. It means that 190 million Chinese people was fed up by imported grain in 2012. This kind of situation has also been proved by the import volume of grain in Jan.–Nov. 2012 which reached 13.98 million tonnes, up by 156.5% compared with 5.45 million tonnes in the same period of 2011.
The official appealed Chinese Government to take measures to keep arable land area higher than the minimum area of 120 million ha. and in the meanwhile to ensure grain output growth by promoting more advanced agricultural production technologies.
