Agrifirm acquires German broiler feed plant

The Netherlands-based Agrifirm has paid an undisclosed sum to French firm Doux to acquire its broiler feed plant in eastern Germany.

The plant which is currently closed, used to produce about 40,000 tonnes of broiler feed a year but Agrifirmhopes to increase this to 60,000 tonnes in the next two years, mainly for the German market.

Production is planned to start again in September after Agrifirm has installed new technologies and techniques at the plant. About 10 employees that had previously been let go will be re-employed after going through training.

At the same time Agrifirm will close two of its factories in the Netherlands.

Agrifirm's communications manager, Henk Wassink said the acquisition would save the firm money by reducing transport costs. However, he added that there was an increasing tendency among German citizens to buy home-grown meat due to their belief that it was safer.
