Indonesia reviews proposal of GM corn, sugar cane cultivation

A final decision is expected sometime next year on a proposal which is being considered by Indonesia on allowing cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn and sugar cane, a senior government official said Wednesday (July 11).

"Trials are being conducted and the results will be evaluated by the food and drug administration and the ministries of agriculture and environment, hopefully by 2013," Agus Pakpahan, Chairperson of the Biosafety Commission for Genetically Engineered Products, said on the side lines of the World Sustainable Agriculture Congress.

He said Indonesia has already permitted imports of 11 types of genetically modified products for food and feed use, mostly corn and soy.
