UK minister starts fresh debate on GM crops

By not introducing genetically modified (GM)crops, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Minister Owen Paterson believes UK agriculture is being "left behind" compared with the rest of the Europe.

The minister also said that GM crops were under so much regulatory scrutiny that GMOs were almost certainly safer than conventional plants and food. Paterson's comments were welcomed by farmers throughout the UK.

"Paterson finally addresses the hypocrisy of being GM dependent and yet not allowing the choice of cultivation", said Yorkshire farmer, Paul Temple. "His comments allow us to have a more practical conversation about GM.".

However, according to National Farmers Union combinable crops chairman, Andrew Watts, there is no point introducing the technology unless there is a real need for it and said that famers needed to be sure of "market acceptance" before GM crops in the UK became a reality.

Organic farmer Ian Pie said he could see both sides of the argument, but in some instance GM crops was not a practical business investment.

"Speaking to guys in America and Australia who are already using GM, you get a mixed picture. Even though the countries are very pro-GM, some farmers are not convinced and often end up having to buy expensive seed. Once they start it's not as if you can go back."
