DuPont Pioneer to open corn research facility in November

DuPont Pioneer, a major producer of hybrid seeds, has started construction on a new 22,500-square-foot multi-million dollar corn research facility in Lethbridge, Alberta, and expects it to be open in November 2014.

The research centre will focus on developing ultra-early maturity corn products for growers in Alberta and Western Canada. DuPont Pioneer says the facility could be expanded in the future to serve other crops as well.

"This facility supports our commitment to providing growers in Western Canada with more choice through the development of ultra-early corn products that may increase the profitability of their operations," Steve King, corn research director for DuPont Pioneer said.

The company says it chose the site of the corn facility to tap into the climate in the region, whichis considered ideal for product development. The company already has a 7-year-old canola production plant nearby.
