The 8th Meeting of the China-Argentina Subcommittee on Fisheries was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 20, 2016.
The two sides reviewed the progress of Chinese squid jigging vessels entering Argentine waters. Regarding the incidents involving fishing vessels Hua Li 8 and Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 in 2016, China requested the Argentine side to effectively ensure the legitimate fishing rights and interests of Chinese vessels. The Argentine side expressed regret over the incidents and promised to properly handle the bilateral fishing disputes. Upon request from the Chinese side, the Argentine side officially presented the detailed map of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), providing the technical basis to reduce or avoid fishing disputes caused by Chinese vessels straying into the Argentine waters. The two sides agreed to further improve the bilateral communication mechanism to address the issues arising from suspected illegal fishing operation of Chinese vessels in Argentine waters in a proper and timely manner.
The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in aquaculture technology training, aquatic product trade and the export of Argentine aquatic products to China that Argentina is interested in.
