Minister Han Changfu met with Ertharin Cousin, World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director, and her delegation in Beijing on June 1, 2016. The two sides exchanged views on enhancing and broadening bilateral cooperation.
Minister Han spoke highly of WFP's great contributions to the eradication of human hunger and malnutrition. He pointed out that, to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the outcomes of the UN Roundtable on South-South Cooperation, and according to the consensus between Vice Premier Wang Yang and Ertharin Cousin at the meeting in June of 2015, MOA and WFP signed a new memorandum of understanding to broaden bilateral cooperation and strengthen South-South Cooperation as well as Public-Private Partnership.
The two sides agreed that China and WFP have maintained friendly and fruitful cooperation for as long as 36 years, making positive contributions to poverty reduction, agricultural production development and farmers' income growth in rural poverty-stricken areas of China and other developing countries.
Both sides agreed to further promote South-South Cooperation under the framework of the new MOU. They also exchanged views on WFP's grain purchase in China and reaffirmed WFP's support for China's Belt and Road Initiative.
