Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen met with Ms. Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez, Minister of Foreign Commerce and Tourism (MINCETUR) of Peru in Beijing on July 15, 2014. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening economic and trade cooperation in agriculture between China and Peru.
At the meeting, Yu pointed out that, with joint efforts from both sides, China and Peru enjoy steady progress in agricultural cooperation in all sub-sectors, including increasing high-level visits and technological cooperation. In particular, the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed in 2009, greatly promoted agricultural trade and brought about tangible benefits to agribusinesses of both countries. And China is willing to work closely with Peru to boost pragmatic cooperation in agricultural trade.
In addition, Yu proposed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the following areas: (1) expansion of bilateral agricultural trade; (2) two-way agricultural investment to sharpen agricultural competitiveness of both counties; and (3) cooperation in production, extension and utilization of Quinoa.
Silva appreciated the achievements in agricultural cooperation between China and Peru particularly after the signing of FTA. She stressed that Peru attaches great importance to agricultural cooperation with China, and wished to further expand bilateral agricultural trade and find a bigger market in China for Peruvian agri-products.
Silva agreed on Yu''s comments and proposal, saying that Peru stands ready to work with China for greater achievements in future agricultural cooperation.
