Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen met with Dr. Archibald, President of Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in Beijing on October 22, 2014. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation in agro-product quality & safety.

Yu noted that agro-product quality & safety is an integral part of China-Canada agricultural partnership. The long-term collaboration in this sector has laid a solid foundation for robust development of agricultural trade between the two countries. Over recent years, the two sides had frequent interactions in agro-product quality & safety legislation and inspection & quarantine personnel exchange.

In order to tap the great potential for future cooperation, Yu put forward a four-point proposal: First, to raise the level and quality of cooperation and facilitate the signing of the Action Plan on China-Canada Agricultural Cooperation; second, to enhance collaboration in inspection & quarantine technologies and ensure agro-product quality & safety in both countries; third, to foster cooperation in veterinary service and animal health for the sound development of livestock production in both countries; and fourth, to promote cooperation in personnel training and make better use of existing mechanism and platform to build up the staff professional capacity.

Dr. Archibald said that Canada has attached great importance to the partnership with China in agro-product quality & safety. He full agreed with Yu on his above proposal and stressed that the Canadian side is keen to work with China in legislation, inspection & quarantine and personnel exchange, in order to boost agricultural trade and bilateral ties between the two countries.
