Second Seminar on Titanium Chlorination Technology and Titanium Material Application opens today in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, China. Zhang Bangxu, Secretary-general of Sichuan Vanadium-titanium Industry Association, chairs the meeting.

According to Guo Xinrong, Secretary-general of Titanium Dioxide Branch of China National Coatings Industry Association, the idea of the seminar is to summon domestic manufacturers to face together the over-capacity and low-end problems by integrating science and technology research resources, policy resources and social resources.

Chlorination technology is listed as one of the key projects according to National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)'s industrial restructuring policies. However, only three of the Chinese titanium dioxide producers among total 57 have activated chlorination production projects. The projects have come on stream for years and have reached a total capacity of 150,000 metric tons per year, roughly 5.2% of titanium dioxide capacity nationwide (2.9 million metric tons per year).

Conversely, productivity of sulfuric acid process titanium dioxide in China has risen dramatically by around 350% in the past decade, greatly contributing to the nationwide structural over-capacity.
