Description:
DHA has attracted more and more attention since it has been recommended by the World Health Organization in 1993. The primary source of DHA is fish oil. However, customers prefer microalgal DHA to fish oil DHA because of higher quality and safety of the former since DHA was successfully obtained from microalgae. In this report, production information focuses on microalgal DHA, while both two kinds of products are covered in consumption information.
China's microalgal DHA industry has been growing rapidly in recent years. The output of microalgal DHA has realized an increase of 443 tonnes at a CAGR of 23% from 2007 to 2010 thanks to the growing demand growth. China's consumption of DHA, both fish oil and microalgal DHA, keeps fast growth at a CAGR of 21% during 2007-2010. This trend will continue in the future, as the demand from downstream industries is keeping increasing.
In spite of the rapid development, the industry stays at an initial development stage compared with developed countries. Therefore, There is plenty of space for China's DHA industry to develop. More and more companies are planning to expand production scale or enter the industry attracted by the high profit.
This report provides primary data and analysis about DHA industry in terms of production situation, pricing and consumption in China to help reader gain vital business intelligence of China's DHA market. Based on in-depth investigation, CCM forecasts the supply and demand of DHA in China to 2015.

Executive summary:
China industrialized DHA production in 2002. Most domestic producers use microalgae as raw material to produce microalgal DHA, which has better quality than fish oil DHA. As to the production technology, microbe fermentation method enjoys higher popularity over fish oil extraction method, as the product made through the former—microalgal DHA—has high quality and high purity, and even costs less.
China's microalgal DHA industry has seen booming growth in recent years. By July 2011, there are ×× active microalgal DHA producers in China, with total capacity of ××t/a. The output has been increased from ×× tonnes in 2007 to ×× tonnes in 2010, thanks to the growing demand in the market.
China's DHA consumption is still limited now, which is attributed to its few application fields and high price. In 2010, the total consumption volume is ×× tonnes. Formula foods and health care products are major end-users. Among formula foods, DHA is mainly used in infant formula, infant cereal and maternal formula; it can be also used in some milk beverages. Cooking oil is an emerging end-use segment in China. In the future, with the improvement in people's health care consciousness, the demand for DHA products will be increasing.
