Sorbitol industry has faced various challenges in recent years, but the challenges may push forward the development and innovation of the production and process technology, which would further improve the quality, lower the cost, and enlarge the application of sorbitol products.
China's sorbitol market experienced great changes in the past ten years, whether in terms of production or consumption. In 2008–2013, the capacity and output of sorbitol both increased rapidly due to strong market demand and low market threshold for producers. In 2014–2017, a few new capacities were added to the sorbitol industry. The output of sorbitol fluctuated with the changes of the price of corn (the raw material of sorbitol) and demand from downstream industries, such as vitamin C and toothpaste. There are mainly two specifications of sorbitol in domestic market, namely 70% syrup sorbitol and crystalline sorbitol. The preparation technology of liquid sorbitol is relatively mature. More attention has been paid to the extraction technology of crystalline sorbitol and improvement of its physical properties. In 2017, the export volume of sorbitol increased a lot. While sorbitol imported to China was crystalline sorbitol for pharmaceutical uses. Having the features of good moisturizing, low sweetness, low calorie, sorbitol is widely applied in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, etc. The consumption of sorbitol is mainly influenced by demand from downstream industries and price changes of sorbitol. Different application fields of sorbitol had witnessed various increases in sorbitol consumption in the past several years.
