MOA to inspect seed-breeding bases of corn and rice, and those bases got spot checked shall have GM detection

  According to Farmers' Daily in Sep. 5, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) required all local agriculture departments in China to have inspections on seed-breeding bases of the year 2016 and to assure the supply of wheat seed, in order to strengthen the inspection on seed-breeding bases of different crops and the original seed market, to fight against illegal productions in seed-breeding bases and fake seed brands and products, and to make sure the security of seed supply.

   

  According to MOA, a thorough inspection should be done in seed-breeding bases of corn in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, Ningxia Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province and seed-breeding bases of rice in 16 provinces or regions including Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, Heilongjiang Province, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Anhui Province, Fujian Province and so on.

  

  It is required that during the inspection, all local agriculture departments shall check whether the seed enterprises is qualified to produce seed, whether the seed productions are legal to produce and whether the production is completely registered. All local agriculture departments shall verify on the production areas and inspect on the product samples.

   

  MOA would have spot checks on the product samples from some of the provinces and regions based on the inspections by all local agriculture departments. MOA would have tests on seed genuineness and genetically modified detection on the sample products of corn and rice.

   

  Seed genuineness shall be tested through SSR marker method according to Protocol for the identification of maize varieties -- SSR Marker Method (NY/T 1432-2014) and Protocol for identification of rice varieties—SSR marker method (NY/T 1433-2014). While genetically modified detection shall be done through quick detection. The testers shall use Cry1Ac/Ab test strips to have quick detection on genetically modified ingredients.

   

  In addition, all local agriculture departments shall assure the supply of wheat seed. Thorough inspections should be done on seed tags, registration information, seed genuineness and so on.

   

  All local agriculture departments shall collect and analyze the information of the amount of seed and seed prices; they shall master and disclose immediately all information of seeds such as its types, amount, prices, supply and demand.

   

  Seed quality from different enterprises shall be guarded. Quality of all seeds should be checked and the unqualified seeds are not allowed to flow into the market.
