Li Jiayang meets FAO Deputy Director-General Daniel Gustafson

Vice Minister of Agriculture and President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) Li Jiayang met with Mr. Daniel Gustafson, Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Beijing on April 19, 2016. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation under the frameworks of South-South Cooperation (SSC) and the Belt and Road Initiative.

 

President Li Jiayang briefed the FAO side on the disciplinary settings, overall planning and implementation of Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Program (ASTIP), postgraduate education and staff recruitment of CAAS. He praised the progress made in recent cooperation between China and the FAO and expressed CAAS''s willingness to work with the FAO to promote future cooperation based on past experience. He hoped that the two sides, under the China-FAO SSC framework, continuously renovate cooperation patterns, jointly formulate the action plan for CAAS-FAO cooperation in the new era to promote SSC to a new level. President Li Jiayang also introduced CAAS''s action plan to implement the Belt and Road Initiative.

 

Daniel Gustafson spoke highly of CAAS-FAO cooperation. He noted that China''s fast growth in agriculture has exerted great influence on the world and China has gained much unique and advanced development experience. He hoped China will actively increase its participation in SSC, sharing experience with other developing countries. He also expressed his hope that the two sides strengthen institutional cooperation, and China dovetail its Belt and Road Initiative with SSC to make continuous contribution to global poverty reduction and food security.
