MOA and the Delegation of the EU to China jointly held the 3rd China-EU Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention in the veterinary and food sector in Beijing on March 8, 2016.
Experts to the Workshop exchanged information on the legal framework, status quo and experience of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) control in the veterinary sector in China and the EU, and discussed the role of international organizations in veterinary antimicrobials regulation.
Countries across the world are increasingly concerned over AMR in veterinary sector. Although antimicrobials play an irreplaceable role in animal farming, their long-term and extensive use, especially inappropriate use, may not only lead to failure in animal diseases control, but also damage public health.
International organizations, including the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), have paid close attention to the impact of antimicrobial application in animal farming on food safety and human health. They called for restricting or banning the use of antimicrobial growth promoters, and strengthening the surveillance and risk assessment over drug-resistance of animal-origin pathogens. The Workshop enhanced mutual understanding, and consensus was reached on the issue of AMR in veterinary sector. It also served as a platform for jointly dealing with the challenges posed by AMR in veterinary sector.
About 70 experts on AMR participated in the Workshop, including experts from China, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and FAO.
