The Michigan State University (MSU) Extension internship program promotes MSU Extension as a future career path for College of Agriculture and Natural Resources undergraduates. Based upon the success of last year’s internship program, the program has expanded from seven interns in 2013 to 13 interns for the 2014 year.
One successful intern from last year’s program included Riley Collins, an animal science major from Commerce Township. Collins worked with educators from Jackson, Lenawee and Washtenaw counties. Her internship experiences led her to a large number of learning and networking opportunities. Some of her opportunities with MSU Extension included publishing articles, appearing as a guest on a radio show, assisting Extension educators at 4-H Exploration days and producing agriculture all-star cards to help educate youth.
Collins was also able to network with others in the agriculture community and gain a vast amount of knowledge in many areas of agriculture.
“Being able to experience different aspects of agriculture allowed me to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios,” Collins said about her summer internship experience that allowed her to get a taste of many MSU Extension programs.
“Between the five educators I worked with, I learned more than I could imagine in three months,” Collins said.
With its success in the past and the growing number of interested students, program coordinators are confident the MSU Extension internship program will remain successful and continue to grow throughout the years.
