Guangzhou China, July 1, 2011 - China's pinene industry developed fast in the past few years, thanks to the increasing demand from domestic market and great demand from overseas. Alpha-pinene (α-pinene) and beta-pinene (β-pinene) are the most important two pinenes with individual advantages. Which one is more potential in the Chinese market? As the two important pinenes, both α-pinene and β-pinene are derivatives of turpentine. α-pinene is mainly applied in synthetic camphor, synthetic borneol, and all kinds of synthetic perfume, with apparent consumption volume of 27,990 tonnes in 2009. While β-pinene is mainly applied to synthesized flavors and polymerized terpene resin, with apparent consumption volume of 17,696 tonnes in 2009.
Driven by increasing demand from downstream industries, the output of pinene kept an uptrend in the past years. As of June 2010, the capacity of α-pinene and β-pinene amounted to 106,500t/a and 47,730t/a respectively, with output of totally 45,990 tonnes and 20,130 tonnes respectively in 2009.
In 2009, the export volume of pinene was 20,434 tonnes, up 14.78%compared with that in previous year. With the development of myrcene in China, the export volume of β-pinene has dropped a little in the past two years, with only about 2,434 tonnes, while the export volume of α-pinene is still large.
