DUBLIN, IRELAND—The 11
th FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Specifications (JMPS) and the 9
th Joint CIPAC/FAO/WHO Open Meeting (the 56
th CIPAC Meeting) were held back to back in Dublin, Ireland from 5
th-14
th June, 2012. The Meetings were hosted by Ireland Department of Agriculture,
Food and the Marine.
The 11th FAO/WHO/JMPS was held from 5th to 10th, June. Ms. Yang Yongzhen from FAO JMPS Secretariat and Dr. Morteza Zaim from WHO JMPS Secretariat organized and attended the Meeting. The Meeting was chaired by JMPS Chairman Mr. Marku D. Muller.
The JMPS Meeting reviewed and approved the 10th JMPS report and the follow-up activities. 12 experts from 11 countries including Ireland, China, Germany and the United States reviewed 22 products proposed by 12 companies, among which 6 were for FAO specifications, 6 for WHO specifications, 3 for FAO/WHO joint specifications and 7 for FAO/WHO reviewed specifications. A Chinese expert carried out the review of proposals to FAO/WHO joint pesticide specifications, exchanged ideas with the attended experts, and answered questions form the proposers in line with the Meeting procedures.
The JMPS Meeting also discussed recommendations from FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management (JMPM) on the assessment and management of adjuvants, and building the procedures and guidelines of equivalence comparison by registration authorities based on analysis and impurity verification data collected from 5 different tests. It also reviewed the comments from the Croplife on amending the handbook on developing and using FAO/WHO specifications for pesticides. All the members also listened to the presentation made by Agrocare, and discussed its proposal regarding the identification of me-too products. The Meeting also put forward next steps for JMPS, and developed a priority list for the development of FAO/WHO specifications for pesticides.
The 9
th Joint CIPAC/FAO/WHO Open Meeting (the 56
th CIPAC Meeting) was held from 11
th to 14
th June, 2012. More than 130 participants from 31 countries attended the session. It adopted the report of last Meeting, reported the review and the release of FAO/WHO specifications as well as the priority list for the development of FAO/WHO specifications for pesticides at the just-ended JMPS Meeting. International organizations or associations like CIPAC, FAO, WHO, AgroCare, AOAC, ASTM, CropLife, ECPA, EFSA and FASA presented their work and relevant actions since the last Meeting. Several CIPAC members briefed their own experiences in pesticide quality management and testing, and participation in CIPAC collaborative tests. 11 experts representing FAO, China, the United States, Switzerland, India, Germany, Ireland,
Ukraine and
Vietnam delivered presentations. The Meeting adopted the report of the last Meeting and the Secretariat report of this Meeting.
Researcher Chen Tiechun from ICAMA attended the above-mentioned Meetings as an expert to FAO/WHO JMPS. Dr. Wu Jinlong from ICMA attended the 9th Joint CIPAC/FAO/WHO Open Meeting (the 56th CIPAC Meeting).
