ICAMA launches Pesticide Safety Monitoring and Evaluation 2013

The Workshop on pesticide management and pesticide safety monitoring and evaluation was held on March 1st, 2013. This signifies the launch of the implementation of phase 2013 of the Project on Pesticide Safety Monitoring and Evaluation.

Li Wenxing, Division Director of MOA Department of Crop Production attended and addressed the meeting. ICAMA Deputy Director-General Wei Qiwen chaired the meeting.

The Project was initiated four years ago and its scope has been expanded with increasing prominent achievements. ICAMA has conducted risk monitoring on Acephate and other 24 pesticides, developed procedures for and approaches to pesticide safety evaluation, and has had a clearer picture about pesticide application and risk status in China.

Experiences accumulated from project implementation have laid a good technical foundation for the establishment of pesticide risk monitoring and evaluation mechanism and high-risk pesticides withdrawal mechanism.

The tasks for project implementation have been broken down and assigned for 2013. The Seminar also made clarified requirements for project implementation. Test monitoring is to be conducted for 15 pesticides in 30 provinces in 2013, mainly focusing on pesticide quality, crop resistance and safety, residue and environmental impacts.

The Seminar also called for earnest implementation of pilots for pesticide application in minor crops or within a limited scope, formulation of code of application of plant-growth regulators and risk-benefit analysis.

Project implementers are encouraged, based on summarizing practices, to keep abreast with the latest development and make preparation for project planning and application for 2014.

More than 100 representatives from project implementers attended the Seminar.
