US farmers' coop to build $14.75-million feed mill

A $14.75-million feed mill will soon rise in Boyden, Iowa, in the US, to meet the increasing needs of its customers, a farmers' cooperative announced on Tuesday, April 14.

The Farmers Coop Society (FCS) said its board of directors had approved the construction of the feed mill, which will be capable of producing 3,000 tonnes of feed per day, including 1,000 tonnes of pellets.

The new facility will be an addition to the cooperative's existing feed mills. It "will be state-of-the-art and allows FCS to capitalize on new business opportunities within the industry," said Brad DeVries, FCS' feed manager.

When fully operational, the new mill would require 45 semi-loads of ingredients and up to 70 loads of corn, and produce 115 semi-loads of complete feed per day.

FCS said its feed business "continues to grow" and that it had been anticipating the need for an additional mill for the last one and a half years.

"The feed team and management are excited about the opportunity to grow their business in northwest Iowa and the surrounding area", it said.

"Boyden is the heart of FCS's present feed territory and this location will optimise transportation efficiencies for ingredients as well as finished feed," DeVries said.
