There’s still time to consider planting options, saysHorizon AgThere’s still time to consider planting options, saysHorizon Ag" title="Share this link on Facebook">USAMarch 18, 2015As farmers finalize their 2015 planting decisions it is important to remember that planting Horizon Ag Clearfield® rice varieties has resulted in increased average yields and more value due to consistent performance, stable input costs, improved weed control and higher grain quality.Input costs, such as weed control and fertilizer, are much more stable with Clearfield varieties, providing ample incentive to plant fields to the Clearfield system this season.Yield IncreasesThe adoption of the Clearfield system in 2001 helped farmers continue to significantly increase field yields. The figure provided illustrates the yield trends in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi over the past few decades. Since 2001, yield improvements have been more drastic in Louisiana relative to the Mid-South largely because of the tremendous shift towards the drill-seeded, delayed-flood production system that has long been the system of choice in Arkansas and Mississippi. The shift in Louisiana was made possible because of Clearfield rice. Though red rice control by Newpath® and Beyond® are extremely important, the production system provides more uniform stands, increases nitrogen management and uptake efficiency, and decreases the effects of water weevil infestations. Furthermore, Newpath offers excellent residual control of many competitive grasses. All of the components of the Clearfield system improve the likelihood for achieving maximum economic yield potential in a given year.In the early years of Clearfield rice, growers with light to moderate red rice infestations could expect an overall yield drag from efforts to combat red rice. Now, because of the tremendous efforts of university breeding partners, varieties like CL111 and CL151 have set a higher standard for yield potential in pure-line varieties. Horizon Ag Clearfield varieties offer consistent performance across most farms, as well as excellent-quality grain at harvest.Advantages of Better QualityIt has been pointed out many times recently that more and more markets for U.S.-grown rice, both domestic and foreign, are demanding better grain quality. Rice buyers have paid valuable premiums for identity-preserved shipments of quality rice. The most recent report came in this month and involves several shipments of CL152. Farmers who managed to keep their CL152 separate from other grains were offered 75 cents per bushel to fill out barge shipments going to Costa Rica. It takes approximately 80,000 bushels to fill a barge, which is equal to about 500 acres of planted rice. CL151 is a higher average yielding variety than CL152, but it would take up to 28 bushels more yield per acre with CL151 to make up the premium price paid for CL152 in this case, at current rice prices offered to farmers by grain terminals. Compared to CLXL745 hybrid rice, with considerably higher input costs, it would take at least 45 bushels per acre more to return the same.As the demand for better quality continues to grow, keeping rice varieties segregated after harvest can result in higher prices for farmers, especially with high-quality varieties such as CL152 and CL111. Generally speaking, Horizon Ag Clearfield rice varieties CL111, CL151 and CL152 are proven to offer better grain quality than the hybrid rice currently available for planting, offering farmers a better chance for higher-than-average prices paid in the market.Stable Weed Control CostsWeed control costs can be an unknown on any given field year to year. In fields planted to the Clearfield system, however, herbicide costs become much more stable. With Clearfield varieties for example, weed control costs are more predictable because of the effectiveness of sequential applications of Newpath and Clearpath® herbicides that provide broad-spectrum control of many weed pests in southern rice fields, including red rice.Although the cost of Clearfield seed is higher than that of conventional seed, farmers and consultants have experienced the advantages of having the Clearfield weed control system in fields, saying it more than makes up the price difference. As an added measure of protection in Clearfield varieties, clomazone can be used on most soils as a pre-emergent to minimize grass pressure prior to the early post-application of Newpath or Clearpath, without crop injury.Resistant BarnyardgrassRecently, ALS-resistant barnyardgrass has been a growing concern in the Mid-South. New herbicides are on the way; however, for those growers who don't have ALS-resistant barnyardgrass, it is important to continue to manage to minimize the chances for getting it. Clearfield varieties allow growers to spray a preemergence application of clomazone followed by two timely applications of Newpath, with rates that are lethal to the grass without fear of injury to the rice.Too many instances occur each year where grass is not sprayed when it is small because the current weather conditions would cause the application to injure Clearfield hybrid rice. Or, the hybrid rice is injured from the first application of Newpath, so the second application is avoided in addition to added expenses of nursing the crop back to health. This is not effective in minimizing ALS barnyardgrass resistance. With really good, new herbicide tools for rice slow coming to market, we need all the tools we have to be managed for maximum longevity.Consistent grain quality, stable input costs, yield performance - all make Horizon Ag Clearfield varieties great choices for maximizing the return on your investment in 2015.More news from: Horizon Ag LLCWebsite: http://www.cnchemicals.com/: March 18, 2015The news item on this page is copyright by the organization where it originatedFair use notice
