Brazil 2014 crop broke record

Brazil's grain production posted a record of 192.8 million tons for 2014, Prensa Latina News Agency said quoting the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The record represents a rise of 2.4% compared to 2013. Soybean saw the highest rise of 5.8% year-on-year to reach 86.4 million tons.

China is the largest buyer of Brazilian soybeans for livestock feed, and sales of the oilseed account for nearly a quarter of the country's annual GDP.

In 2015, Brazil targets to break its record again with a harvest exceeding 198 million tons, in spite of the drought in the southeast, where its plantations are mostly located.

It is possible for the country's acreage to reach 56 million hectares, assuming the promises set out in the agrarian reform by the government of Dilma Rousseff are fulfilled. This reform, which aims to give unemployed peasants a plot of idle land, is one of the electoral promises of the president and is one of the measures to raise the international competiveness of the country's economy.
