Brazilian soy farmers complete 52% of harvest

Ahead of where the harvest was at the same point last year, Brazilian soy farmers have harvested their crop on 52% of the land planted with the beans, consultancy Safras & Mercado said.

On March 7, 2013, the harvest was 48% complete, according to Safras. The average progress for the harvest on this date over the past five years is 35%.

The harvest in Mato Grosso state, which produces about 30% of Brazil's soy, was 73% finished as of today, compared with 74% on the same date in 2013.

Heavy rains in Mato Grosso recently have caused concern that the harvest there might be slowed because harvesting equipment can't operate in swampy fields. The harvest in that state is in fact ahead of the average of the past five years, of 60%.
