Nepal's chicken prices rise as supply tightens under heat

With major meat producing districts sweltering in the heat, chickenprices in Nepal are rising amid a drop in supply.

Chicken prices have been on an upward trajectory in the last four months, rising by 33%.

Traders attributed the decline in supply to slowing production. "The supply has come down by around 20% in recent days," said Shreeya Dhakal, vice chairman of the Nepal Chicken Sellers Association (NCSA).

He added that soaring temperatures in the Tarai districts badly affected chicken production and pushed up production costs.

According to the NCSA, only 200,000 kg of chickens are supplied in the Kathmandu valley, which has daily demand of 250,000 kg.

The Agricultural Ministry projected that chicken output would drop 4.95% to NPR40.69 million (US$421,483.31) during this fiscal year.
