Cargill sells Swift Current feed mill as New Generation Pork expands in Manitoba

Cargill Inc. is selling its Swift Current feed mill and property to New Generation Pork Finishing Inc., a Manitoba operation that is expanding into Saskatchewan.

Though terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the American agribusiness conglomerate is said to provide management services at the mill.

New Generation Pork Finishing, which runs a 5,000-sow farrowing operation near the hamlet of Hamiota in western Manitoba, said the Swift Current feed mill complements a separate acquisition of hog facilities in the area.

The addition of the Saskatchewan finishing capacity enables New Generation to produce over 125,000 market hogs a year.

Dickson Gould, an official of New Generation said the populating of hog finishing barns, new jobs have and will continue at the Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan area in a time when many positions in the industry are being reduced or eliminated.

Cargill said its "commitment to Western Canada's livestock industry is enduring and robust," and it will serve feed customers in Saskatchewan "through the development of manufacturing capabilities in North Battleford."
