Feed quality and animal health keynoted this year''s China Animal Husbandry and Feed Industry Expos. Organised by the country''s feed and livestock association, it is biggest and most important feed and livestock exhibition in China.

Compared to the last year''s fare in Xi''an, there were more companies present but the recession saw a reduction in the number of visitors. Coincidentally, shortly before the show, the first Chinese case of AH1N1 was reported in Chengdu. It caused a chill at the earlier Hog Forum, which ran several days earlier. It also led to a reduction in the number of foreign visitors to the exhibition.

However, while this kept down the number of foreign visitors, it by no means reduced the number of foreign companies present at an admittedly domestically oriented fair, all eager to gain a share of China''s vast, growing market. Multinational giants such as Nutreco''s Trouw Nutrition, Novus and Danisco and feed milling equipment providers such as Andritz Feed & Biofuel were all represented.

They were met by domestic champions such as China Grains & Oils Group Feed Company (COFCO), domestic feed giants Tongwei and the Hope Group, leading hog breeder Tang Ren Shen and domestic milling giants Muyang and Zhengchang. Both in turn were complimented by scores of local based firms, such as Chengdu Nongxing Feed Mill Company, which is integrating itself into hog breeding or hopeful sounding additive maker Chengdu Prevail.

People come here to meet insiders and the VIPs in this industry.

Coming off two years pocked mark first by scores of food safety scandals, then the contamination of milk by melamine, food safety dominated the Chinese language slogans throughout the fair. According to a participant at the eFeedLink fair booth, "while a lot of this is just slogans, it is clear that the message has gotten through. The principle of food safety is at the top of everyone''s mind."
