On December 9, two national 973 projects undertaken by CNPC Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development, namely "Utilization of greenhouse gas as resource in EOR and storage of it underground" and "Fundamental research on enhanced oil recovery by chemical flooding and microbial flooding", successfully passed the inspection and acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and gained high appraisal.

Headed by chief scientist Professor Shen Pingping, the project team of "Utilization of greenhouse gas as resource in EOR and storage of it underground" has accomplished fundamental research on CO2 effective capture, safe storage and oil displacement, resulting in a number of achievements such as theory of CO2 geological storage, phase theory of multiphase and multicomponent, and flow mechanism and law of multiphase and multicomponent. These have effectively promoted experimental demonstration on CO2 emission reduction and its use as resource in EOR, and reflected corresponding environmental and economic benefits.

The chief scientist of the "Fundamental research on enhanced oil recovery by chemical flooding and microbial flooding" project is Yuan Shiyi, who is Director-General of CNPC Science & Technology Management Department and also academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The project team has achieved significant achievements in basic theory and new technology R&D of chemical flooding and microbial flooding. Two theories were evolved, namely molecular design of chemical oil displacement agent and physical-chemical seepage of oil displacement system. Petroleum sulfonate and aryl-alkyl Betaine surfactant, as well as five types of new efficient polymer suitable for medium-low permeability reservoirs and high temperature and high salinity reservoirs were developed. The success of the project will ensure Chin''s leading position in tertiary oil recovery in the world.
