South Korea-based steelmaker POSCO has announced that it has won an order for the supply of 88,000 mt of 11 types of thick steel plate for a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which is one of the world`s largest oil prospecting ships that South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine & Engineering Construction (DSMEC) is currently constructing.

The order in question marks the first time that thick plates for building an FPSO have been supplied exclusively by a single steel company. POSCO has won the contract because it meets both the strict safety standards and quality conditions including anti-corrosion and strength of steel that can bear the harsh marine environment, accelerating its entry into the energy steel market.

Additionally, POSCO won a contract with the multinational oil and chemical company Shell in September 2011, which made POSCO a supplier for a variety of offshore structural steel plates for all of Shell`s marine plant projects up to 2016.
