Vice Minister Niu Dun attended and addressed the World Food Day (WFD) celebration held in Tsinghua University in Beijing on Oct.16, 2014. The event was jointly hosted by MOA, the State Administration of Grain (SAG) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The theme of 2014 WFD is "Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth".
In his speech, Vice Minister Niu noted that taking Family Farming as the theme this year fully reflects the crucial role played by family farmers in feeding the world, contributing to poverty alleviation, improvement in wellbeing, resource conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development in rural areas.
In echoing the theme, Niu stressed,"family farming fits in China's reality". Family farmers remain the major force of agricultural development in China. With their hard work and wisdom, Chinese farmers produce diversified and rich agri-products to sustain its 1.3 billion-population. Meanwhile, Chinese farmers inherited and developed China's unique farming civilization of long history.
The Chinese Government always attaches great importance to agricultural development and food security. MOA adopted a series of pro-farming and pro-farmer policies to bolster China's comprehensive agricultural productivity. China has the confidence and the ability to ensure its food security mainly relying on its own resources.
Several other activities were held as part of the celebration, including the launching ceremony of the Week of "Love Food Save Food" Publicity.
Nearly 1000 participants attended the celebration, including officials from MOA and SAG, representatives from international organizations, experts, students and reporters.
Yuan Longping, the "Father of Hybrid Rice", also attended the event.
