On 4 May, 2017, Brother Enterprises announced the postponement of its 1,000 t/a 3-aminopropanol project, which was constructed to facilitate its production of D-panthenol, an additive to cosmetics. This postponement in project construction and operation is expected to help ensure its production scale and profitability, given the short time the company marched into the cosmetics business and the serious global oversupply of D-panthenol.

In early May, the price of VB3 continued to go up with the quoted price raised to USD10,441.44/t (RMB72,000/t) by some manufacturers. The price will continue to remain high in 2017 when the environmental regulations get stricter, plus the tightened supply of raw material and production suspension of major producers.

In the first half of May, the supply of VB6 tightened due to environmental regulations, despite the market price remained almost the same as the last month. Influenced by stricter environmental policies, VB6 will see further tightened supply in H2 2017, which may drive its price up.

In Q1 2017, VB5 saw increased export prices but decreased export volumes in China. The export volume went down due to tightened supply and decreased overseas demand while the export price benefited from YoY increase in the market price of VB5 in China. CCM estimates that H1 2017 will also see increased export prices and decreased export volumes of VB5.

H2 2016 saw prices of VC increase in China because of the production limitation which was resulted from environmental regulations. In 2017, the price of VC is estimated to continue rising under stricter environmental policies, plus Northeast Pharmaceutical's relocation of the 20,000 t/a VC production line which will not recover until the end of 2018.

Q1 2017 saw VE market prices surge because of tightened raw material supply and strict environmental regulations. In Q2 2017, the VE price is estimated to fall as new capacity for VE and its raw material is added, helping to relieve the supply situation.

On 28 April, Guangji Pharmaceutical released a supplement to its 2016 financial report regarding pollutant discharge and production suspension. In 2016, market prices of VB2 and VB6 rose YoY under strict environmental regulations. Meanwhile, Guangji Pharmaceutical saw a YoY increase in gross profit margin because of reduced production costs thanks to increased environmental investment. In 2017, Guangji Pharmaceutical will continue to benefit as and when environmental regulation becomes stricter.

On 25 April, Lanbo Biotechnology announced a turnaround in 2016 net profit thanks to YoY increases in sales and price of nicotinamide. Besides, Lanbo Biotechnology boasts that its nicotinamide is cost-saving with less impurity and less pollution, which may contribute to its financial improvement in 2017.

On 3 May, Amyris bought back from Nenter the exclusive right of VA cooperative R&D. The successful R&D may intensify the competition in VA market once the new technology is transferred to the third party by Amyris. However, considering the existing 20,000 t/a VE production line, Nenter may be slightly affected.
