On 8 Jan., 2021, the office of Crop Variety Approval Committee of Jilin Province publicized the varieties approved on the 2nd meeting of the 8th committee, including 237 corn varietiesm 69 rice varieties, 32 soybean varieties and 3 wheat varieties.

On 29 Dec., 2020, the office of Chongqing Crop Variety Examination and Approval Committee finished the preliminary examination of 74 varieties of including 31 rice varieties, 36 corn varieties, 4 soybean varieties and 3 wheat varieties.

On 22 Jan., 2021, the National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center released the national prediction on the occurrence of level I crop pests and diseases in 2021. According to the analysis on pests and diseases bases, cropping systems, crop pattern and weather condition, it is expected that the level I crop pests and diseases will be at serious level in 2021, with 95.20 million ha (1.42 billion mu) of areas affected, up by 17.5% YoY. Specifically, pests such as spodoptera frugiperda, loxostege sticticalis, armyworm, rice planthopper, rice leaf roller, stem borer and wheat aphid as well as prevalent diseases such as wheat stripe rust, wheat fusarium blight and late blight will impose threatens to more than 70% of producing areas of wheat, rice, corn and potato. Therefore, effective preventive measures should be adopted in timely manner to reduce loss in yield. There will be risk of spreading in quarantine pests and diseases such as Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Cydia pomonella, citrus yellow shoot and pear fire blight.

According to China Customs, MoM increase was seen in import of vegetable seed in Dec., 2020, with decrease in it's export. China exported 760,592 kg of vegetable seed in Dec., 2020, with the value of USD24,484,589, down by 0.30% and 15.93% MoM, respectively. A total of 1,981,924 kg of vegetable seed were imported to China in Dec., 2020, with the value of USD37,710,397, up by 22.90% and 40.15% MoM, respectively.

According to China Customs, China's import of corn seed in Dec., 2020 up largely MoM while it's export went down. Specifically, China imported 22,077 kg of corn seed in Dec., 2020, with the value of USD177,882, up significantly by 2,797% and 3,487% MoM. China exported 289,019 kg of corn seed in Dec., 2020, with the value of USD1,447,095, down by 13.27% and 12.54% MoM.

On 15 Jan., Yuan Longping, Chairman of Sea-rice Forum and Director of Qingdao Sea-rice Research and Development Center, released exciting news on the 5th International Sea-rice Forum that in 2020, Yuan Longping's team had planted 10,000 mu of sea-rice for demonstration in ten places, the average yield of which is more than 400 kg. Among all the demonstration places, Shandong Weifang Yuwang Base has become the first national sea-rice base planted with over 50,000 mu in 2020. At present, the sea-rice team has signed contracts for 6 million mu of saline land transformation projects nationwide, and will officially launch the industrial promotion and commercial operation of sea-rice this year.

On 12 Jan. 2021, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) held a press conference with the topic as "scientific and technological innovation leading the high-quality development of grain industry". At the conference, the basic situation of China's staple grain seed industry during the 13th Five Year Plan period, the scientific progress of CAAS in the field of staple grain breeding during the 13th Five Year Plan period, and CAAS's deployment of making a turnaround in seed industry with the support of science and technology during the 14th Five Year Plan period were introduced.

On 31 Dec., 2020, construction of Sichuan Germplasm Resources Central Library officially began in Tianfu Modern Seed Industrial Park, Qionglai City. The Library is expected to complete construction and come into use in 2023. According to the plan, 524,000 crop (including forest and grass) seed resources, 1.05 million livestock and poultry gene resources and 260,000 aquatic gene resources can be saved in the Library, with the retention period of up to 50 years.
