Survey of Titanium Dioxide in China(The ninth edition) 01-25-2021

This research aims to study China’s titanium dioxide industry by production, price, import & export and consumption, and to elaborate the development of the future titanium dioxide market.

Scope of the report
Region scope: China
Time scope: 2017 to 2019

With the continuous development of China's titanium dioxide industry, China has become one of the biggest titanium dioxide producers in the world. Recent years, China's TiO2 industry tended to develop steadily. The period of 2017–2019 saw consecutive growth of TiO2 output in China, while fluctuation in the capacity. In 2017–2019, domestic TiO2 capacity was 3,732,000 t/a, 3,766,000 t/a and 3,713,000 t/a respectively. The output increased from 2,885,616 tonnes to 3,175,500 tonnes, with a CAGR of 4.90% in 2017–2019.

With the increasing pressure on environmental inspections, the titanium dioxide industry concentration has improved. In 2017–2019, there were about 40 main titanium dioxide manufacturers in China. In 2019, of all the domestic full-process TiO2 manufacturers that maintained normal production, 11 manufacturers had their output exceeding 100,000 tonnes. The output of these 11 enterprises altogether was some 2.15 million tonnes, about 68% of the total output.

In terms of titanium dioxide production technology, chloride process has been encouraged in pursuit of higher quality, less by-products and low energy consumption. In April 2019, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the Catalogue for Guiding Industrial Restructuring (Version 2019, Consultation Paper), encouraging manufacturers to set up chloride process titanium dioxide production lines with a capacity of 30,000 t/a and above. However, domestic chloride process development was slow and mainly limited by:

- Large investment capital. The investment cost of chloride process was twice than that of sulfate process with the same capacity.
- Higher technology challenge
- Higher quality requirements for raw materials

Domestic titanium dioxide production will still be based on sulfate process, but more and more manufacturers will adopt chloride process.

China, as an industrial power, is not only a producing powerhouse, but also a big consumer of TiO2. In 2017–2019, domestic consumption volumes of titanium dioxide were 2,133,766 tonnes, 2,172,896 tonnes and 2,303,518 tonnes respectively, increasing with a CAGR of 3.90%. Coating, plastic and papermaking are still the top three consumption sectors for titanium dioxide industry, taking up over 90% of the total consumption in the past three years in China.
