Pinoxaden
Pinoxaden
is a herbicide, developed by agrochemical giant Syngenta and used against
grasses, marketed in 2006 for the first time. The pesticide is registered in
Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Finland,
France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Uruguay.
Pinoxaden
will lose its patent in China in 2019 and in the USA in 2020, opening the door
for cheap generic replications by pesticide producers. Numerous new entrants
are expected to participate in the competition in the
global pinoxaden market, thus, resulting in an intensified
competition in the market. Especially Chinese pesticide producers, which have a
limited research and development capability, are well known to copy foreign
pesticides after the patent is expired.
Pinoxaden
is used in the post-emergence control of annual grasses, including Alopecurus,
Apera, Avena, Lolium, Phalaris and Setaria spp., in wheat and barley.
Plants
are likely to become resistant after multiple applications of pinoxaden,
so farmers should be careful in not overusing the herbicide. Especially some
populations of Annual Ryegrass show a significant resistant to pinoxaden.
The
worldwide pinoxaden market is traditionally dominated by key players
from Europe, supported by a large production of barley and wheat,
where pinoxaden is used regularly to fight weeds and grasses. In
Europe, German, France and Russia are leading the field
of pinoxaden demand.
However,
the highest growth rate of demand for pinoxadem is seen in Asia
Pacific, driven by the two largest populated countries India and China. The
final major region with significant demand for pinoxaden is North
America.
Fluopicolide
Fluopicolide
is a fungicide manly used for protection of potatoes. The pesticide was
developed and marketed by Bayer CropScience in 2006. It is used mostly in
combination with other fungicides to control downy mildews, late blight and Pythium.
Fluopicolide’s
mode of action is typical of the systemic fungicides used specifically against
oomycete fungi. It disrupts many steps in their reproductive cycle. For a
maximum protection when using this product as a foliar spray, it is preferable to
tank mix it with a chlorothalonil-based product.
The
fungicide is registered currently in Argentina, Australia, Denmark, South
Africa, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China. Finland, France, the
Netherlands, Switzerland, and Uruguay. It will lose its patent in the coming
years ahead, facing copies from Chinese and other competitors very fast.
What’s
more, Fluopicolide is listed in the highly recommended pesticides for
vegetables, melons, and fruits by the Shanghai List of Highly Recommended
Pesticides in 2017.
