China issued safety certificates to two GM rice in 2009. A few years passed, these two GM rice are still waiting for approval from various examination and approval committee, to become commercialized. As the safety certificates will expire in August next year, more than 60 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering signed a petition and submitted it to the central government in July this year, to increase the production of GM crops, reported by domestic media recently.
However, there is little probability that these two GM rice can be introduced to farms next year. Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China is still hesitating about the commercialization of GM rice and GM corn in China, due to public’s strong objections to GM products. Some experts said it is a pity and may hinder the R&D of GM crops in China. Chinese's companies R&D capability of pesticides and seeds is very weak compared to multinational corporations. As for the R&D capability of GM crops, China's companies will still be left behind.
