As of Feb 2008, there are 14 active producers of dimer acid in China with total capacity of 70,000t/a, most of which are distributed in East China. Fujian Provincial Institute of Chemical Industrial Science & Technology researched and developed the multi-tower continuous vacuum distillation equipment successfully and this equipment has been widely adopted by producers all over China. There are many dimer acid production technologies in China, and the most popular ones include thermal polymerization method and bleaching earth catalytic polymerization method. Cheap and available raw materials, such as acid oil, the byproduct from the production of rapeseed oil, palm oil and cottonseed oil, are very important for most fatty acid producers in China, which may become a new way for the development of fatty acid industry in China. The main raw materials of dimer acid are some kinds of unsaturated fatty acids, such as tall oil fatty acid, rapeseed oil fatty acid, soybean oil fatty acid, cottonseed oil fatty acid and sunflower oil fatty acid. In the 1990s, most producers adopted the refined oleic acid to produce dimer acid, and the quality of dimer acid was greatly improved. In recent years, Chinese government is planning to bring forward several positive measures to encourage the production of biodiesel, and it has set a goal that the national output of biodiesel should reach 200 million tonnes in 2010. So in the future, some oleic acid and dimer acid producers may face the difficulty of no enough acid oil. And the purchasing competition of acid oil may become even more furious.
