When it comes to March 2017, the M&A events are frequently seen in China’s seed industry. On 6 March, Zhongnongfa Seed Industry Group sold out a 67% stake in Henan Yingtai Agrochemical Co., Ltd. Gansu Dunhuang Seed Co., Ltd. completed industrial and commercial registration for its wholly-owned subsidiary, Jiuquan Dunhuang Seed Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. Yuan Longping High-tech Agricultural Co., Ltd. acquired a 90% stake in Beijing Lantron Seed Corporation to expand its corn seed business. On 9 March, BASF AG entered exclusive negotiation with Bayer AG about the acquisition of the latter’s vegetable seed business.

In addition, several seed companies published their 2017 financial reports. 2017 witnessed plummeted sales and net profit of Shandong Denghai Seed Co., Ltd. but improved major businesses of Anhui Win-all High-tech Seed Co., Ltd. (Anhui Win-all). On 7 March, Anhui Win-all also became the exclusive seed supplier of SinoChem Agricultural Holdings Co., Ltd.

In terms of seed varieties, 192 corn seed breeds were revoked in Sichuan Province and 537 kept. Hebei Province announced certificated wheat breeds, Henan Province major crop seed varieties, and Shaanxi Province the first batch of registered introduced seeds in 2018. The central government also built up supervision system covering provincial and municipal levels and promoted the establishment of county-level seed and seedling management organisations in order to make up the shortage of market surveillance and ensure seed safety. It also strengthened the protection of intelligent property rights of R&D results so as to improve the innovation ability and facilitate sustainable development of the modern seed industry.
