1. Position of Chinese Gum Rosin in the world

Gum rosin is a characteristic native product in China. Different from floating rosin which is made from the papermaking pulp that is largely produced in the western world, gum rosin is distillated from oleoresin, a natural pine excrete.

The total production of rosin (including gum rosin, floating rosin and carbonation rosin) in the world has been 1,050,000Mt/year. These rosin include

1) Floating rosin and carbonation rosin 435,000Mt/year, made in America and Europe

2) Gum Rosin 615,000Mt/year, including

  • China 400,000-450,000Mt/year
  • Indonesia 53,000Mt/year
  • Brazil 40,000Mt/year
  • Mexico 27,000Mt/year
  • India 26.6Mt/year
  • Russia 18,000Mt/year
  • Portugal 15,000Mt/year
  • Other countries

The above figure shows that the gum rosin from China accounts about 70% of the total production of gum rosin in the world.

Amongst the 400,000Mt/year trading quantity of rosin in the world, the gum rosin from China accounts to about 60%.

2. Pricing of Gum Rosin

It is almost a trend that the price of gum rosin is higher from every Nov to Mar next year because the supply of raw material, oleoresin, is tight during this time.

Table 1 Price of gum rosin in the past three years

Time update Price (rosin, WW grade)
Sept. 1998 RMB4,000-4,500/Mt
Nov. 1998 RMB5,700-5,800/Mt
Mar. 1999 RMB4,600-5,000/Mt
May 1999 RMB4,200-4,300/Mt
Oct. 1999 RMB4,000-4,500/Mt
April 2000 RMB3,500-3,900/Mt
Aug. 2000 RMB4,500-5,000/Mt
Jan. 2001 RMB5,000-RMB6,000/Mt

3. Production of Gum Rosin

The actual yield of gum rosin from oleoresin is 77%-80%. Based on the production of oleoresin, we can estimate the production of gum rosin as follows:

2) Export situation of gum rosin in 2000

Generally about 60-80% Chinese gum rosin is exported, ie. about 250,000-300,000Mt/year.

The main export markets of Chinese gum rosin are Europe, Far East, Japan, Hong, Kong and Korea, where the main applications are in the production of basic commodities such as paint and ink.

6. Consumption of Gum Rosin

As shown before the annual production of gum rosin is about 400,000-450,000Mt. Among them only about one third is consumed within China to make soap, paper size, paint, ink, synthetic rubber, adhesive, etc. The rest is either exported or made into derivatives and then exported also. In some cases gum rosin has been used in many fields in which other rosins can not substitute. It is forecasted that the domestic demand for gum rosin and its derivatives has been growing in the past few years, especially in the fields of tackifier resins, paper sizing agents, etc.
