Ordinance on Safety of GMO (Last update: 08/03/2001) |
| State Council
publicized the Safety Management Ordinance on Gene Modified Objects in July
2001. Central government manages the GMO safety via different levels system,
evaluation system and identification systems. Here is some main points:
1. The research units must have safety security facilities. The research
unit can not apply for the safety license until they finish the research.
2. Any production & processing of GMO products must be approved central
government or concerning local governments. Peasants who want to plant or
breed GMO products must get approval from concerning authorities via the
assistance from seed distributors, who are authorized and filed by central
government. 3. The GMO producers must identify the products, specifying
the key material of the GMO. Any non-identified GMO can not be distributed.
4. The import & export of GMO products must have technical support document

| A Desulfuration-Denitration
Activated Carbon Production Line Finished (Last update: 09/10/2001)

Xinhua Chemical Factory cooperates with Japanese companies to develop desulfuration-denitration
activated carbon. They have finished the construction and start commercial
production. The total investment for this project is RMB40 million. The

Flavor Production Line in Wutong Flavors Co. (Last

| "Shandong
Wutong Flavors Co. Ltd. has built a SO-1 production line in August 2001.
This is the unique production line in China for oxidation of C-4, C-5 olefin.
Now this company is the largest one in China to produce heterocyclic flavors
in China. The products include pyrazine series (40 species), pyrrole series
(3 species), pyridine series (4 species), thiazole series (20 species),
furan series (4 species), thiofuran (3 species),mercaptan series (8 species),
sulfuric ether series (8 species), sulfuric ester series (2 species). (Source:

| Nanometer-Nickel
Production Line in Ningbo (Last update: 08/25/2001) |
| Ningbo
Guangbo Nanometer Material Co. Ltd. has established a production line of
superfine nanometer nickel. This symbolizes that China has grasped the technology
for this product. The production capacity of nickel powder is 2MT/year.
Ningbo Guangbo Nanometer Material Co. Ltd. plans to build 9 production lines
in the future, after when the total production capacity can reach 120MT/year,

| A 10,000MT/year
epoxy resin production line has been built in Sinopec Baling Petrochemical
Co Ltd. Yueyang Epoxy Resin Factory. At present this factory can produce
50 kinds of epoxy resin. The annual production is 25,000MT/year. (Source:

| Bayer's
Polycarbonate Project Signed in Shanghai (Last update:

| Bayer signed
a contract with Shanghai Chlor Alkali Chemical Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of
Shanghai Huayi Group, to start the polycarbonate project on August 8th,
2001. According to the contract, Bayer holds 90% shares in the joint venture
while Shanghai Chlor Alakali Chemical Co. Ltd. holds 10% shares. The designed
capacity of the polycarbonate project is 100,000MT/year. The construction
will proceed in two stage, first stage to build 50,000MT/year production
line and the second stage to build 50,000MT/year production line. They will
be finished in year 2003 and year 2005, respectively. The total investment
for this project is USD340 million. So far Bayer has established 11 factories
in China and there are 1,600 employees in mainland China. (Source: China

Obtains Technology of Acrylon (Last update: 08/07/2001)

| Shanghai
Petrochemical Co. Ltd. has developed the technology for building 66,000Mt/year
production line of acrylon. The commercial production in this production
line was successful, which symbolizes that China no longer need to import
the technology from overseas. This company claims that it has packed technology
for acrylon project and it has the ability to contract the construction
in the oversea countries. So far the total production capacity of acrylon
in Shanghai Petrochemical Co. Ltd. is 150,000Mt/year, accounting to one
third of total production in China. It is estimated that the total consumption
of acrylon in China is 700,000Mt/year, the largest one in the world. (Source:

Polyformaldehyde Production Line Is To Be Built (Last

| Polyplastics,
MGC and Ticona plans to build a polyformaldehyde production line in Nantong.
The designed capacity is 60,000MT/year. The proposal has been submitted
