to Build the Largest Sorbitol Production Base in Lianyungan (Last

| Roguette of France
invested USD200 million in Jiangsu Lianyungang to establish Roguette
Lianyungang Co. Ltd. This company already bought Lianyungang Lejin
Chemical Co. Ltd. which produces sorbitol. It also plans to build
a new production line of sorbitol with capacity of 100,000MT/year.
At the same time this company plans to build a starch production line

Xylose Project Passes Appraisal (Last update:

using corn cob to make oligo xylose by enzyme method, carried out
by China Agricultural University and Shandong Longli Biological Science
& Technology Co., Ltd., has passed appraisal from experts recently.
It is reported that there are only two manufacturers in the world

| Angel Succeeded
in Production of High-sucrose Yeast (Last

| Angel Yeast Co.
Ltd. got success in producing high-sucrose yeast. The commercial product
has been launched into the market in the end of 2000 and the product
has been accepted by domestic consumers. It is reported that by using
high-sucrose yeast, the fermentation activity can reach to 700mgCO2/1HR.
The success of this technology has made good preparation for the enlargement
of 15,000Mt/year production line in the near future. In the past,
China can not produce high-sucrose yeast and has to rely on the import

a joint lab engaging in the research on chitosan has been set up in
Zhejiang Ocean Biochemical Co. Ltd. It is jointly set up by CAS Lanzhou
Chemical & Physical Research Institute, Zhejiang Yuhuan Science &
Technology Research Institute and Zhejiang Yuhuan Ocean Biochemical
Co. Ltd. Zhejiang Yuhuan County is the largest production base of
chitosan while Zhejiang Yuhuan Ocean Biochemical Co. Ltd. is one of

Acid Factory is one of leading sorbic acid manufacturers in China.
In the past years they kept on improving the production technology.
The production capacity has increased from 4,000MT/year to 8,000MT/year.
They have also applied patent for the key technology. Now their sorbic
acid has been awarded as the national level new product. And the total
production capacity of sorbic acid and potassium sorbate in this factory

Institute successfully cultures high yield strain for arachidonic
acid production by fermentation method. The result work passed sanction
from central government in 1998. In 1999, CAS Plasma Research Institute
cooperated with an company to set up Wuhan Xiwang Biological Co. Ltd.
and began the commercial production of arachidonic acid. Arachidonic
acid is crucial for the growth of neutral system of human body. So
far the arachidonic acid from Wuhan Xiwang has been used in the production
of fresh milk and milk powder in Wuhan Youzhiyou Co. and Qingdao Shengyuan

| China Tea Drink
Industrial Standard will be executed since June 1st. After three years'
discussion, emendation, this standard regulates in details the nomenclature,
classification, technology, requirement, test method, label, packing
and transportation of tea drink. According to this regulation, there
are some mandatory items for the tea drink, including polyphenol,
caffeine, carbon dioxide, fruit juice, protein and food additive.
It is not allowed to add polyphenol and caffeine in the tea drink.

| Overdose of
Sweeteners & Preservatives in Beverage and Food

| China Consumer
Association published the statistic recently. Among the 52 beverage
products investigated, 71% of them contains overdosing chemical synthetic
sweeteners or preservatives. According to the report, most sweeteners
are cyclamate. Among the 21 kinds of congee and 19 kinds of jelly
investigated, most of them contain too much cyclamate. While among
the 34 kinds of candied food investigated, most of them contains too
