| Ephedrine by Biological
Technology (Last update: 12/07/2000) |
| A technology to produce
ephedrine HCL by biological method has been developed by China Pharmacy
University and Nanjing Red Sun Biopharmaceutical Co. Ltd. This work has
been approved by SDA. In the past, ephedrine HCL is extracted from ephedra.
Generally it need about 100MT of ephedra to make 1MT of ephedrine. The extraction
method raised high pollution and destroys the natural sources. Chinese government
already forbid the exploitation of ephedra. So it is expected that the biological
technology to produce ephedrine will bring new hope for Chinese manufacturers.

| Conba
Group Finds a New Method to Extract Ginkgo Biloba (Last update: 12/04/2000) |
| Being the earliest
manufacturer of ginkgo biloba preparation in China, Conba Group finds out
a new method to extract ginkgo biloba by high collective resin method. Generally
the effective components of ginkgo biloba extract(EGB) are ginkgo flavonglycosides
(24% min by HPLC) and total terpenelactones (6% min by HPLC). But for a
long history, the EGB from China is characteristic for its high content
of ginkgolic acid (5ppm min), which prevent Chinese EGB entering the American
market. It is reported that by using the extraction method in Conba Group
they can obtain EGB with low ginkgolic acid (5ppm max). (Source: Medicine

| Black Cohosh
Production Base (Last update: Dec 2000) |
| Shaanxi Lueyang County
encourages the local people to plant black cohosh. They introduce the new
plantation technology in 1997. This county has already collected 1 million
kg of black cohosh product in the past few years. So far this county is

of Licorice in Xinjiang (Last update: Dec 2000) |
| As a trial, the plantation
of 2,000Mu licorice got success in Hutubi, Xinjiang. It is reported that
this Xinjiang county plans to enlarge the plantation of licorice to 50,000Mu
in the next two year. By that time, Hutubi will become one of the largest

Glucose Injection Approved to Produce (Last update: 11/14/2000) |

Co. Ltd. has been approved by SDA to produce puerarin glucose injection.
This medicine can be injected directly into vein. It is safe, efficient

| Nanjing Hailing TCM
Manufacturing Engineering Research Center was set up by Yongzijiang Pharmaceutical
Group Co. and Beijing TCM University, Nanjing University, Nanjing University
of Science and Technology, Nanjing TCM University, CAS Shanghai Pharmaceutical
Research Institute. The registered investment is RMB 10 million, with Yongzijiang
Pharmaceutical Group Co holding 82.5% and the rest universities and institute
holding 17.5%. The center will carry out the research on TCM manufacturing
engineering, TCM related technology and facilities and equipment. (Source:

| Magnolia
Officinalis Rehd in Hubei (Last update: 11/01/2000) |
| Magnolia officinalis
Rehd production base in Enshi, Hubei, has been set up recently. It is a
national base. Now there are over 4 million pieces of magnolia officinalis
rehd growing in Enshi, about 90% of which are cultured by the local peasants.
Magnolia officinalis rehd is a famous Chinese medicine. Its leaf is used

| During the Tenth-Five-Year
Plan China will invest RMB300 million to develop traditional Chinese medicines.
This news comes from the recent symposium focusing on the modernization,
innovation,development and research on TCM. An officer from Chinese Traditional
Medicine Bureau comments that there are three barriers to the development
of TCM: 1) low production technology; 2) lack of technology standard and

| Two
Chinese Tibetan Medicine Pass FDA Certification (Last update: Sept 2000) |
| The Qinghai Drug Administration
declared that two kinds of the Chinese-Tibetan medicine ,Yiganjian pill
and Rhodiola Firilowii granule,have passed the FDA certification.Yiganjian
pill is made from a herb extract in Tibet and has effective action on curing
hepatitis. Rhodiola Firilowii granule is also made from a herb growing in
