Technology Got Success in China (Last update: August 2000) |
| The researchers in
Petrochemical Branch Research Institute of Heilongjiang Science Research
Institute amplified the their lab result by 5,600 times to operate the production
line of beta-mercapto ethanol (beta-ME) with capacity of 1,000Mt/year and
got success. Beta-ME is an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and is also
a chain transfer agent, catalyst for polymerization. The result from some
domestic petrochemical consumers comments that beta-ME from Heilongjiang
institute is superior to oversea products. In the past China relied on the

Largest n-Butyric Acid line in Asia (Last update: August 2000) |
| The first production
line of n-butyric acid was set up in Shandong Qilu Petrochemical Corp No.2
Fertilizer Factory. The capacity of n-butyric acid is 2,000Mt/year. It is
claimed that so far this is the largest n-butyric acid production line in

Propane Enlargement Project in Jinzhou (Last update: August 2000) |
| The 80,000Mt/year epoxy
propane enlargement project in Jinzhou was started in May 1999. It is expected
that it will be finished in 2000. The total capacity of epoxy propane in
Jinzhou Petrochemical Corp will come to 120,000Mt/year after the enlargement.
It is reported that the investment for the enlargement is RMB1.5 billions.

| Maoming
to Enlarge the Ethylene Capacity to 850,000Mt/year (Last update: August

| Maoming Petrochemical
Corp has submitted a feasibility report to Sinopec as to the plan to enlarge
the ethylene capacity from 350,000Mt/year at present to 850,000Mt/year in
2003. The production capacity of propylene will enlarge from 140,000Mt/year
to 200,000Mt/year. In addition, Maoming decide to build a new oil distillation
facility with treating capacity of 4-6 million Mt/year of oil. It is reported
that State Development and Planning Committee will examine and approve this

| 2,3-Butanediol
and Butanone Production by Fermentation Method (Last update: August

| The Feed Additive Technology
Development Center has developed a new technology to make 2,3-butanediol
and butanone by fermentation method. They use corn as raw material to make
glucose by enzyme method. Then they use fermentation technology to make
2,3-butanediol and butanone. The conversion rate from glucose to 2,3-butanediol
is 90%. The final concentration of 2,3-butanediol is 103g/L and the yield
is 0.8g/L.h. The conversion rate from 2,3-butanediol to butanone is 100%

| CLT-Acid
in Qingdao Tianyuan increased to 1,600Mt/year (Last update: July 2000) |
| The enlargement of
CLT-acid in Qingdao Tianyuan was completed in April 2000. Now the production
capacity of CLT-acid in Qingdao Tianyuan is 1,600Mt/year/. Qingdao Tianyuan
becomes the largest CLT-acid producer in China. The chemical name for CLT-acid
is 6-chloro-3-aminotuluene-4-sulfonic acid. It is an intermediate for organic

Formaldehyde in Hebei (Last update: July 2000) |
| A production line of
160,000Mt/year formaldehyde was set up in Hebei Wen'an Kaiyao Chemical Co.
Ltd. It is reported that the production line is automatic and normally there
are only 8 workers on the production line. The production cost is claimed
to be RMB80/Mt lower than that of the average level. The production was
constructed from Nov 1999 to May 2000. It is claimed this is the biggest

Chem. has finished that enlargement of p-nitro-aniline in April 2000. Zhenjiang
Fine Chem is one of the largest p-nitro-aniline producers in China. It is
reported that the production cost has been greatly decreased after the enlargement.

of 1999. The production capacity is 50,000Mt/year. So far there are three

The CPL from these domestic manufacturers can supply about 50% of the domestic
