1. Classification of Feed Additives

Generally, feed additives are classified into two big categories, nutritional feed additives and non-nutritional feed additives.  Nutritional feed additives include minerals, vitamins and amino acids. Non-nutritional feed additives include growth accelerators (e.g. hormone, enzyme preparations, antibiotics, sedative, arsenic reagent), stabilizers (e.g. antioxidant and preservatives), anthelmintics (e.g. antiparasitic and antibiotic) and other additives (e.g. colours, flavors, emulsifiers etc).

2.       Overview of Feed Additives Production in China

In a typical feed formulation, the total amount of vitamins is only about 0.2% but it can account upto 10% of the total costs of the feed. Generally, complete feed contains about 1-5% feed premixes.  The quantity of some additives in the feed may even be as small as a few parts per million, however, their effect on animals is very important. Therefore, feed additives are the core of the feed industry.

Proper use of additives improves the quality of feed and increases the yield of feed by improving the quality of animal produced. Therefore, the technology of feed additive production directly influences the development of the feed and animal husbandry industry.

Due to the late introduction of the feed industry in China, which began during the mid 1970’s, the development of the industry is far behind the western developed countries.  There are about 173 kinds of feed additives allowed to be used in feed production in China while over 300 feed additives are approved in USA and over 260 in Europe.  In fact, there are only a few manufacturers specialized for feed additives production in China and the source of many important feed additives such as vitamins and amino acids are mainly imported from overseas.  However, the Chinese government has put much effort in formulating and monitoring the development of the feed additives industry and there has been some good progress in the past twenty years.

After 20 years development, the feed additives industry in China began to form a systematic structure.  There are over 1,000 feed additives manufacturers in China. Now China can produce 18 categories of feed additives (over 100 kinds), including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other non-nutrient additives and pharmaceutical additives. The present production of feed additive is over 50,000Mt/year, with annual production value of RMB5 billions.  The largest item of feed additive is dicalcium phosphate, with annual production of 140,000-160,000Mt/year.  The production of trace element is about 30-40Mt/year.  By 1999, there are 173 kinds of feed additives allowed to be used in China.
