 1. Introduction

Though profound in resources, the bromine in China has been exploited behind that of the developed countries. However the increased capacity and improved technology for both bromine and bromides in the recent years have no wonder showed to the world a clear message that Chinese production is growing up and should not be neglected as in the past. This is quite obvious after China has entered the WTO. In fact, in the past years, some oversea companies already started the cooperation with Chinese companies from strategically point of view. No doubt more oversea companies will enter China to find opportunities, either by setting up joint ventures or by engaging in commercial activities. Thus it comes quite essential to learn about the bromine industry and bromide industry, the past, the present, and if possible to deduce, the future trend, and to evaluate its competitiveness in the world market.

However, the relative easy production technology and incompact management systems in China made the bromine & bromides industry, bromine industry in particular, grew more than what is recorded and reported. Thus it is hard to collect the industrial information systematically and update.

It is under this circumstance that Guangzhou CCM Chemicals Co., Ltd., on request from xxxx, carried out a systematic study on the bromine industry & bromides industry in China, bromine industry in particular.

The aim of this report is:

-          To introduce the salt production situation and bromine resources in China

-          To outline the Chinese bromine industry from aspects of production, import & export, end uses, etc.

-          To summarize & introduce the Chinese bromine manufacturers

-          To evaluate the competitiveness of Chinese bromine industry

-          To outline the bromide industries in brief

2. Methodology & Sources

…… (Omitted)

This report is presented in two parts:

-          The report main body: This part is in Word form, as it is presented hereinafter. The information that cannot be formulated into database is reported in the main body.

-          The database: This part is in Excel form. It includes the information of Chinese bromine manufacturers, import & export shipment record. There are 2 tables, total 10 sheets. The numerate method of each sheet coordinates with its position in the main body of Word form.

The information in this report is dated to April 2002.

3. Glossary

Bromide

Bromine compound, or chemical compound of bromine.

Theoretically bromides covers all the chemical compounds containing bromine. In the import & export business the bromide products fall into HS code from 2827 to 2928. For more of HS codes of bromine contained products please refer to the Appendix III.

Brine water

Brine water refers to the liquid, after processing of seawater or well salt water, whose solids contain is more than 50% sodium chloride and whose concentration is above 5oBe’ (15oC).

Bittern

Bittern refers to the saturated mother liquid after production of salt.

Unit:

1USD=8.27RMB

USD: US dollar

RMB: currency unit in China, also called Yuan

km2: square kilometer

MT: metric ton

Superficial Consumption

The superficial consumption equals to: production + import – export. It is one of factors reflecting the demand, which excludes storage quantity. As the storage quantity of bromine and bromides are quite small, in this report we roughly assume that superficial consumption means the actual consumption, also means the demand.

Ownership

-            State owned

The whole asset of a factory/company is invested and owned by the local/central government.

-            Private owned

The whole asset of a factory/company is invested and owned by individual person.  The owner has his/her own right to the management of the factory/company.

-            Stock

The company is managed in form of stock company. It may/may not listed in the Stock Market. But the management must comply with the rule of stock company.

-            Joint venture

Foreign company and Chinese company invest together in the entity.  The two or more cooperating partners share the profit on mutual benefit. The Chinese partner maybe an individual or a state owned unit.

-            Wholly foreign owned:

The investor/owner of the company is an individual/unit coming from areas outside the Mainland China.

Foreign/Oversea

Anything or any activity pertaining to individual/unit coming from territories outside Mainland, P. R. China.  E.g., foreign company refers to a company locating in a country outside Mainland China.

Trade ways

Trade ways refer to the methods to deal the goods during the import activity or export activity.

In China the trade ways are classified into the following categories:

-          Ordinary Trade

Ordinary trade refers to the unilateral import or unilateral export conducted by enterprises locating in Mainland China and having import/export right.

To simplify the explanation, people can regard ordinary trade the same as a business is regarded in the western countries. E.g. in the import business, the Chinese company who has import & export right buys goods from oversea company and distributes the goods in China or consumes the goods itself.
